The Quiz Daddy currently runs a secondhand store in Los Angeles
Are you happy that these people link you and the store to it? Or are you ready to move on?
My biggest regret is that I didn’t start [the Quiz Daddy’s Closet Instagram] during HQ. I was able to have 100,000 followers. I could make millions of dollars a year if I did this at the time.
I do not know now. Maybe it’s just a name I’ll always have and it’s fine. I’m definitely continuing it. In the context of selling clothes, the name doesn’t really mean much. But I still haven’t finished the puzzle. So hopefully I’ll have a way out to get that moniker back for its original purpose.
Well, there are certainly some similarities between quizzes and savings.
It’s definitely a crazy thing to be obsessed with cards and have an OCD element in them. I’m just a conscientious collector, so I can’t stop buying. I’m opening the package right now.
Your collection goes beyond t-shirts. You don’t have a baseball card and a lunch box…
Stamps, coins, fossils and comics. I concentrated my collection as an adult but as a child it was everything: banknotes, stamps, boxes of Wheaties, things that didn’t appear. I had some Baby Beanie in the mix. I will collect anything. Cans of Campbell’s Soup will appear with Wayne Gretzky on them. I’ve got a collection of Coca-Cola cans. Anything with very limited variations and regional variations. They’ll have a can of Coca-Cola UNC or Duke available as soon as they win the championship there. I’ve done road trips like, “I have to get that.”
When M&Ms first launched M&Ms Crispy, they put “New” on the wrapping paper. I save that because they don’t have “New” on the wrapper anymore so it’s a limited wrapper. I have the first edition of the American Dream that says “New Flavors.
Do you still have it?
YES. Now it’s probably been five years since it came out so they don’t talk about new flavors anymore. I save these. I do not know why! It has Stephen Colbert on it. So my personal collection is baseball and showbiz. So comedian tees: any Jerry Lewis stuff, I’ve got Merv Griffin stuff, Dave Letterman stuff, Conan O’Brien shirt. Any kind of showbiz content and then minor league baseball. All the things that I loved growing up
What about your favorite collection?
It’s OCD. My therapy, my way of dealing with the crazy world we live in. I think that’s what drives people to collect — like nostalgia. It’s just yearning for a simpler time, a better time. There really is no good time and everything is bad forever. You just didn’t know it when you were a kid. So it’s just trying to get that childhood feeling back.
