The released video shows the alternation between assistant principal, teacher at Wayne County School :: WRAL.com

– A Wayne County teacher is fighting to get back into the classroom after confronting an assistant principal over a pocket knife.

Anthony Williams has had his pay suspended after being charged with having a weapon on campus and resisting a public official.

Williams, a teacher at Southern Wayne High School, carries a pocket knife on the schoolyard. Officials said a vice-captain approached Williams during a school basketball game on Wednesday, February 16.

According to the sheriff’s office, the co-pilot asked Williams to move to a more private location and then questioned the teacher about the knife and asked him to hand it over.

“Mr Williams failed to comply,” a statement read, “resulting in a physical collision between Mr Williams and his deputy.”

However, according to his attorney, Williams, an earth science teacher, was given permission by the school to use the knife in the classroom’s lab.

A Wayne County teacher has been charged with carrying a pocket knife in the schoolyard and resisting an assistant principal. However, his lawyer said he had been given permission by the school to use the knife in his science lab.

Williams has many supporters who rallied to his defense on Tuesday. He was not available for comment, but his attorney and several current and former students spoke on his behalf, describing him as a role model.

Habekah Cannon, the attorney representing Williams, said: “Mr Williams has been unreasonably suspended following a brutal assault.

“He was a great teacher,” said Alessandra Martinez. “He made a huge impact on me.”

Security video obtained by WRAL News shows the encounter in the high school gym.

In the video, you can see two men walking towards the double doors.

The statement said they had moved to an area “to give Williams privacy while discussing this matter.”

Seconds later, the men began to scuffle.

Williams’ attorney said the deputy put the teacher in a suffocation and held himself.

In the quote against Williams, Vice Wood wrote, “When I tried to take the knife from Mr. Williams, he pulled it out several times and wouldn’t let go of the knife.”

Williams’ wife says the incident has left her family traumatized.

“My 9-year-old daughter unfortunately witnessed her father being assaulted. She is dealing with anxiety, doesn’t want to be alone and doesn’t want to leave her father,” his wife said.

Williams was charged with having a weapon on school property and resisting a public officer.

A school district spokesman said Williams’ suspension – with pay – is the norm when a teacher is charged with a crime.

In another demonstration of Williams’ suspension, students organized and walked out of their classrooms last Thursday. Williams is also a softball coach. He has taught at Southern Wayne since 2008.

In a statement released Tuesday, the school district said it would not take any action against Williams until it was able to fully investigate what happened.
