MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) – Love is booming this month, and it’s not just between married couples or people dating.
People are hugging their families, especially mom.
A heartfelt reunion between a mother and a son at Milwaukee’s Mitchell International Airport (MKE) has captured the attention of millions on social media.
Maria Gonzalez took out her phone to record her fiancé, Jose De la Cruz Nunez, about to be reunited with his mother after three years of not seeing her. Nunez didn’t know his mother had flown in from Puerto Rico. It was around midnight as he drowsily waited for his brother-in-law’s flight to land.
“I didn’t expect him to have any pain,” said Gonzalez. “He said his heart stopped. He didn’t expect that.”
Three years have passed and Gonzalez has arranged the reunion as a surprise.
When Nunez saw his mother, he couldn’t contain his emotions.
“Do you know that person?” Gonzalez asks Nunez in the video. It took a minute before she burst into tears.
The video has been shared by accounts like Upworthy. It has millions of views and shares.
Gonzalez said she was shocked so many people had a strong reaction to it.
“There’s a lot of people talking about how much they miss their mom about how it makes them want to reconnect with their mom,” Gonzalez said. “I was also shocked.”
That’s a common feeling many have felt in just the past two years as the pandemic has kept families apart. Gonzalez believes that’s part of what resonates with people.
“We can’t see or see our family very often, but most of all, I think we all have a soft support for our mother and it’s not every day you see a man cry.
The family lives in Green Bay. Gonzalez said the two-hour drive home from the airport, Nunez held his mother’s hand.
