The Rise of Non-Binary Representation in Pop Culture

Societally, the idea of the gender binary has only become a larger conversation as of late. In years past, this type of conversation wasn’t nearly as mainstream as it is today. This has changed drastically as film, television, and fashion have become more diverse, and a wide variety of stories are being told.

Representation has been a concept Hollywood and other aspects of pop culture have often failed to embrace wholeheartedly. However, this is changing swiftly as on, and off-screen creators and non-binary actors are making their names known in the industry — defying traditional gender norms and living on their own terms.

In this article, we take a look at the gender binary and the rising representation of non-binary characters and entertainers in the world of pop culture.

What are Gender Binaries?

The gender binary refers to the idea that there are only two genders — male and female. It’s a system of classification used to express an idea that one of those two genders is where everyone must fall in and conform to.

Overall, the pop culture landscape has favored the more rigid structures of the binary but in recent years, there has been significant progress to branch outside those norms.

Going Beyond the Binary

While there have always been non-conforming stories to tell and creators to tell them, in the world of pop culture there has been more hesitation to allow those stories into the mainstream. Let’s take a closer look at three areas of the pop culture landscape and how they’ve begun to embrace non-binary representation.

Film & Television

When it comes to the film and television landscape, specifically within the Hollywood context, more non-conforming stories are being told than ever before.

More television shows are introducing non-binary characters into their storylines, including shows such as Billions, Big Sky, One Day at a Time, and Star Trek: Discovery. Each of these stories, and the additional stories across various TV genres, is unique and offers a different perspective — with many actors and their characters becoming the first non-binary story told on their respective shows.

Fashion

Fashion is designed to be a form of self-expression. In recent years, that has never been more apparent than in the rise of gender-non-conforming clothing on the runways and in stores. Worldwide, designers and fashion houses are beginning to embrace a more fluid style of dressing — with genderless clothing dominating Spring 2022 fashion weeks, thanks to designers like Helmut Lang, Eckhaus Latta, and Thom Browne transforming their runways with loose-fitting styles and boxy proportions.

As the fashion industry moves away from traditional binaries and into more inclusive, diverse designs — we’re going to see a significant change in the overall pop culture landscape.

Celebrities & Famous Figures

As the media landscape changes with the times, more and more celebrities are opening up to the public and sharing their non-binary identities. Celebrities, including Demi Lovato, Jonathan Van Ness, and Janelle Monáe are breaking the traditional gender norms in favor of a more fluid life — paving the way for the next generation of creators and entertainers.
