Kyle Rittenhouse incited the deadly shooting in Kenosha, Wisconsin, last year by pointing his AR-15-style weapon at Joseph Rosenbaum, prosecutors said Monday in ending the arguments of his murder trial.

Prosecutor Thomas Binger said: “That’s what provoked the whole case. “When the defendant provoked this episode, he lost his right to defend himself. You can’t claim defense against a risk you created.”

In response, defense attorney Mark Richards said Rittenhouse did not act recklessly when he shot and killed Rosenbaum, who Richards alleges threatened him, chased him, threw a plastic bag at him and lunged at him with a gun. his.

Richards said: “When my client shot Joseph Rosenbaum, he feared for his life. He was scared by previous threats, previous statements and violent behavior by the client. My goods have witnessed”.

The duel-ending arguments, which took up most of Monday, came at the end of the two-week trial, highlighted by emotion and light. testimony from Rittenhouse himself, who said he acted in self-defense when he shot and killed Rosenbaum.

A mob then pursued the teenager, and Rittenhouse testified that he shot in self-defense at a man who was about to kick him; shot and killed Anthony Huber, who hit him with a skateboard; and shot Gaige Grosskreutz, who was armed with a pistol. Rosenbaum and Huber were killed, and Grosskreutz was wounded.

The group of 18 jurors will be narrowed down to 12 this morning and will then begin discussing the case.

Earlier on Monday, Judge Bruce Schroeder denied a light weapons charge against Rittenhouse, now 18. He still faces five felony counts and if convicted of the most serious offence, he could face the mandatory sentence of life in prison.

Schroeder also read a set of legal instructions to jurors and informed them that they would be allowed to consider lesser charges for two of the five counts.

The trial featured more than a dozen videos from the night of August 25, 2020, showing what happened before, during and after the shooting. Most of the facts about what happened that night are not up for debate – rather, the focus of the trial was on analyzing Rittenhouse’s actions and whether they could be considered “reasonable”.

The prosecution reset its case last Tuesday and defense Friday off.
