Mellow has been a fan of how the show establishes their personal style and loves that each girl has her own distinct taste. This time, however, she wanted to dig deeper.

With a fast-paced script and four core characters — not to mention some minor characters — HBO Max series There is an extensive wardrobe of costumes. Furthermore, Mellow explains, there’s not much overlap when it comes to four girls’ style. Inspired by trendy influencers and stars on TikTok and Instagram, she created mood boards for each character. With Bela, she looks to people with a bold, bold style, like Ella Emhoff, Annie Lee Larsonand OliviaRodrigo. Meanwhile, Leighton’s bands are heavily influenced by real-life rich It girls, including Gigi Hadid and Gigi Hadid. Bettina Looney. For Whitney’s outfit, she took inspiration from May Aleali and Chloe x Halle.
To assemble the girls’ wardrobes, Mellow shopped from each character’s point of view. For instance, Leighton will likely shop in New York City at stores like Saks Fifth Avenue and Bloomingdale’s, while Kimberly will head to Target or Madewell for something a little nicer.
Although Mellow’s team has tirelessly researched and sourcing, the costume designer says the actors’ personal styles in real life influenced their casting process. She told POPSUGAR, “Each actor brings a lot of fun. “They’re super engaged with their characters.” For the four actors, Mellow makes accessory choices based on their body types and preferences and will never go ahead with something they don’t like. “It’s definitely a collaboration between me and the actor to get to the next level of approval,” she said.
In season two, all the plots thicken: Bela experiences ups and downs in her relationship with Eric as she pursues a career in comedy; Leighton accept her gender and confidence; Whitney found her identity outside football while entertaining a new suitor; and Kimberly tackle grueling personal and financial decisions. All of the characters’ journeys are reflected in their clothing choices in subtle ways.
