The Steam Deck Is Open to PC Gaming in 2022 More Than Ever

Despite spending over a decade on game media, I’ve never been a PC gamer. I played PC games for a bit in my youth, but I transitioned to a short career in graphic design – where the Mac reigns supreme – around the same time the PC hardware arms race accelerated. As a result, PC games have long been out of my reach, both financially and practically. Even if I can afford it, I have no knowledge of how to build a PC, I’ve heard a lot of bad things about docking rigs and I don’t have time to learn about it myself. both. I’m settled in a place where PC gaming always feels foreign and confusing. It was in that context that the Steam Deck appeared, effectively breaking down most of the barriers separating me and the PC gaming community.

Cost is definitely an important consideration. At around $500 for the mid-range model, the Steam Deck is about half the price of many standard pre-built gaming PCs and roughly the same price as consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X. into a pill that’s easier to swallow, and a good starting point for me as someone who’s built a very small library of Steam games over the years and just wants to dip a toe in, regardless.

That’s a good price in part because of its other key feature, its form factor. The Steam Deck is a portable PC first and foremost, which is sure to appeal to veteran PC players looking to take their games everywhere. However, I come to it from the other side, as a dedicated Nintendo Switch fan who just loves mobile gaming. I play a lot of games on my console, but mobile has always been a better fit for my life, for sheer convenience. I feel at home gaming on the go, so the mobile PC Steam Deck intro definitely stands out to me thanks to the mobile department. This isn’t a new way to play my PC library, but a whole new platform that happens to be similar in function and form to another that I love: the Switch.

Perhaps most importantly, the Steam Deck feels welcoming and user-friendly, as opposed to traditional PC gaming which, from the outside at least, seems intimidating. I don’t have to fret about tinkering with settings or installing drivers or trial and error for optimal performance. I can buy a Deck verified game, download it, and in most cases it will work properly. I’ll take a break and play in a few minutes, reclining on the couch while watching TV. It feels comfortable right from the start.

And amazingly, all these qualities have also made the Steam Deck a great set of PC training wheels. Tinkering is not necessary, but it is also not recommended. Some of my favorite voices in gaming media have talked about how easy and fun it was for them to venture beyond the safe confines of the Steam Deck UI and test the program. custom firmware, alternative storefronts, or other settings. I’ve only found out so far, but it’s nice to know that I can have both: the ability to use the tutorial to run something custom like Game Pass streaming, and then the ability to revert back to the interface. Familiar Steam Deck user interface for less stress- free and streamlined experience.

To be sure, the Steam Deck has some issues. It’s bulky, the fans can get loud and the vents get hot at times, games crash more often than on traditional consoles, features like inconsistent background updates, and poor battery life. much to look forward to. It’s like a first draft of Valve’s ambitious ideas, not a finished version. I remember the original bulky Nintendo DS, which was later replaced by the much more affordable DS Lite. Chances are there will be a nicer version of the Steam Deck.

And when that happens, I’ll probably buy it. I love my Steam Deck, not only for all the amazing gaming experiences it has given me this year, but also for helping to gently introduce me into a community that I previously felt excluded from. can be penetrated. I’m a PC gamer now, albeit a kid. But who knows? Maybe one day I’ll even get a decent gaming desktop rig. After all, I’m building a venerable Steam library.
