“[…] she was carrying a ridiculously large bag,” Wambsgans said. “What’s in it? Flat shoes for the subway? Her lunch box? I mean, Greg, it’s monstrous. It is very large. You can take it camping. You can slide it on the floor after a job at the bank.” He was offended just by her presence.
Costume designer Matland explained the outfit choice in an interview with bell ringer. “We wanted her to look like she didn’t fit, anything that would make her stand out in a crowd. And in this crowd, anything that was too present, too obvious, would make her stand out. evicted from this house.”
Choosing a bag with a striking Burberry plaid pattern was intentional. “We know that [the bag] must determine what a person, such as the middle class, can aspire to help tell their story that they are moving forward. She wears this bag because she thinks it makes her look important and it backfires. We knew it had to have some kind of logo and we didn’t want the logo to be so rare that she couldn’t afford it. So our goal was to bring it down to her standards of what she thought was the most glorious and refined – but it’s not.”
What is remarkable is that the bag in question has a retail price of over $2,800. It’s an expensive bag from an iconic, luxury brand that most of us would consider a exclusive right to own, but not the Roys and those in their 0.0001% orbit. To them, it was derisive and shameful. The bag itself is not a metaphor for the taste of gallantry, but rather a reminder of the cruelty and callousness of the Roy family and their associates.
