The synagogue remains an active crime scene with bomb technicians on site

Although all the hostages are now safe, the Beth Israel synagogue remains an active crime scene, with technicians blasting the scene, Colleyville Police Chief Michael Miller said at an event. Press Conference.

He added that all of the hostages were adults, though did not provide further information about their ages or identities.

One-day activity: Miller said police received a 911 call at 10:41 a.m. Services at the synagogue were being streamed through apps including Facebook and Zoom when the suspect entered and took four people hostage.

Police immediately established a siege around the synagogue, evacuated homes in the area and called in an area SWAT team. The FBI has been contacted, as have the ATF and other federal partners.

Authorities negotiated with the suspect “all day,” Miller said, adding that he was “in constant contact with him.”

In the end, the suspect released one hostage, who was unharmed and is now fine, Miller said.

The hostage rescue team entered the synagogue at 9pm, rescuing the remaining three hostages. The suspect is dead, Miller confirmed.

The community has come together: Miller said the incident was “extremely personal” for him and his colleagues – but he found hope “in the way the community has come together.”

“This community, the other churches, have all reached out,” he said. “The food was brought in, our people were taken care of.”
