‘The world needs to slow down,’ son says after 75-year-old mother died in Overland Park crash | News

OVERLAND PARK, KS (KCTV) – One person was killed and another hospitalized following a collision at the Overland Park intersection Monday night.

On Wednesday, Overland Park police identified the dead as 75-year-old Barbara Patterson of Overland Park.

Officer John Lacy said Patterson was not at fault. He said the initial report, citing a witness, showed that the other driver, a 20-year-old man, was driving at “high speed” and “didn’t follow traffic signals”.

Police and medical teams responded at around 8:30 p.m. at West 127th Street and Quivira Street in connection with a two-vehicle crash. Police said a car driving south on Quivira Road collided with a vehicle traveling west on 127th Street.

The driver of the car traveling on Route 127 was determined to be dead after the car wreck. The driver of the vehicle on Quivira Road was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the Overland Park Police Department.

Patterson’s son, Michael Pence, said his mother avoids driving on the highway because speed makes her uncomfortable. She feels safer on the street.

“The world needs to slow down,” Pence said.

An investigation into the accident is underway. Anyone who witnessed the wreck is asked to call the Overland Park Police Department at 913-895-6300.
