As part of Google Workspaces, this new feature in Google Chat will allow users to create personal tasks directly from individual or group messages. This feature will be very useful for users who often have to copy text messages and open new tabs to perform tasks, which is a very complicated procedure. This feature will be rolled out to Android and Web users of Google Workspace as well as legacy G Suite Basic and Business starting May 23. Google Workspace posted in its official blog explains the benefits of this new feature. It says, “This feature allows you to easily capture tasks from conversations with your colleagues via Chat. Once you’ve created a personal task, you can add a completion date and description, then quickly navigate back to the conversation.

Google Chat update brings ‘create personal actions’ feature

Previously, the process of creating a new task and adding a due date was a bit more cumbersome with users needing to go to a separate page to open and create the task. This will also lead to unnecessary back and forth between the action menu and Google Chat. This feature already exists on some other platforms like Slack, where users don’t need to leave the chat window to create a task. With this Google Chat update, Workspace users will now also enjoy single-window operations, where they can complete the entire process without leaving the message box. The way this feature works is very simple. While chatting, users can highlight any text message and click on the three vertical dot menu in the pop-up option. Now it will show a new option as ‘Add to work’. By clicking on it, the selected text becomes a new action and is added to Google tasks. Users can also add a deadline to the task and it will also appear in their Google Calendar.

The blog post has also stated that the feature will be rolling out to iOS devices in the coming months. Although rollout to Android and Web users has begun, even if you don’t have the feature right now, don’t worry. It will show up on your Google Chat soon.
