Thyroid imbalance in infants: Research

Thyroid imbalance affects even newborns, research revealed by the neonatal department of the Graduate Institute of Child Health (PGICH), Noida, was carried out on 200 babies born premature or born at nine months but seriously ill, was accepted for publication in the journal Endocrine and Metabolism Storage.

The babies became so sick that they were hospitalized in the neonatal ICU (NICU).

‘A simple blood test on the third or fourth day after birth can detect thyroid deficiency due to illness acquired after birth, in premature or sick babies it may not be enough to diagnosed with congenital thyroid deficiency.’

According to research, about 10% of newborn samples have thyroid hormone deficiency. This imbalance and deficiency, experts say, adversely affects the outcome of the disease in which children are admitted to the NICU.

It can also increase the severity of the disease.

What’s more, research shows that some children have a congenital thyroid deficiency that can put them at risk for mental retardation, if thyroid hormone replacement isn’t given right away.

Dr. Ruchi Rai, head of neonatology at PGICH, said: “Of the 200 infants, 100 were premature and the remaining 100 were born full term but were critically ill. These infants were admitted to our NICU. within seven days of birth. As is the custom at PGICH, we do thyroid screening for all babies admitted on the third or fourth day of life.We found that about 10% are affected. thyroid deficiency. These children are at greater risk of developing severe disease, have a greater chance of being put on ventilator support or have mental retardation.”

“A repeat examination at the third week of life is necessary. All premature and sick babies must be evaluated,” the doctor said.
