tiktok: Instagram is working on this TikTok-‘inspired’ feature

Photo and video sharing platform Instagram working on a new feature that will add vertical, full-screen video to the Feed, similar to in TikTok. Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri posted on Twitter that the image-sharing platform is currently testing a new, “rich viewing” experience within itself Feed Home.

With the testing of the feature, Instagram’s plan is to “put more videos front and center”. This feature will change the Home Feed in that it will take up significantly more space for visual content, removing a navigation bar at the bottom and a bar at the top. From the bottom navigation bar you can access ReelsExplore tab, your page etc. The top bar will have options from which you can check notifications, open messages, create new posts etc.
Instagram has seen its Reels grow in popularity as it contributes more than 20% of the time people spend on the platform and drives more video content as a result.
Mosseiri asked for feedback from Instagram users, but it doesn’t look like the popularity of short-form videos will decline anytime soon. Instagram is also giving cash rewards to top Stories creators to attract more people. The platform has also invested in creator tools like Templates, which allow creators to use the Stories format for their videos. Also, because reposting TikToks on Instagram is not something Meta If desired, the platform will change its ranking algorithm to reward original content rather than reposted content.
