Tom Cruise knows what it takes to elevate watches and blockbusters

Welcome to Clock of the weekwhere we’ll track the rarest, wildest and most coveted watches spotted on celebrities.

by Tom Cruise Top Gun: Maverick could be merely a sequel to a money-making blockbuster. Instead, a few tearful exchanges between Cruise and Miles Teller landed the film in the Best Picture category. trip Rolex GMT-Master II similarly raised.

The GMT-Master was originally developed as a daily tool watch for Pan-Am crew members who needed to keep track of two time zones at once. This has made the watch a good choice for a guy known for his role as the Maverick pilot. But Cruise’s GMT is much more luxurious – more Emirates than Spirit. While most GMTs are steel, the Cruise is made of substantial white gold.

How can you say? Rolex, always happy to help collectors flaunt their status, has added an easy-to-understand visual cue to each white gold GMT. When this red and blue “Pepsi” version was first released in 2014, it came with a new and improved ceramic bezel and a standard black dial. But when Rolex released an almost identical version of the watch with the same red and blue color combination and stainless steel ceramic bezel a few years later, they began to associate white gold versions with navy blue dial. Rolex even went back to customers who had purchased a white gold GMT with a black dial and suggested they exchange it for a blue one so that it wouldn’t be confused with the steel the watch was wearing. Cruise clearly understands that sometimes the difference between luxury and economy is found in the small details.

Orlando Bloom’s Patek Philippe Calatrava Watch

Many red carpet celebrities have pulled away from Patek Philippe’s Calatrava, the brand’s simple button-down wristwatch. Few people rocked this version of Calatrava, carved with leaves and a small gecko, of which only six in existence. But can it save you 15% or more on car insurance?

John Krasinski’s IWC Portugieser Chronograph

Awards season can be a bittersweet time for watchmaking. A lot of the red carpet goodness is the product of behind-the-scenes branding, not the passion of an avid viewer. The SAG Award-winning Krasinski with his very own Portugieser is a welcome example of the latter. And this watch fulfills all the roles that we expect in a great watch. Krasinski wore it with a white t-shirt on the set as well as walking out a good dinner clutching a bag of doggy. Only a true extremist would bring that watch to the red carpet like Krasinski.
