Tom Hanks brought David S. Pumpkins back to scare – or more likely, confuse – more haunted house attendees in the latest episode of Live Saturday night.
Jack Harlow, host of October 29, joined SNL cast Ego Nwodim and Andrew Dismukes take a trip through the Cellblock 666 attraction as part of the skit’s Fright Night fantasy Halloween event.
Like previous David S. Pumpkins appearances, guests are eager to get a scare with the help of some of horror’s most familiar faces. That includes Freddy Kruger, Michael Myers, the haunted doll Annabelle and Itby Pennywise. But interspersed is the vibrant orange of Hanks and the cheerful Goofy Pumpkin, who appear over and over again in front of the bewildered trio.
Of course, when Dismukes’ character initially asked who he was, Pumpkins replied in the usual manner: “I’m David Pumpkins, man.” But when pressed to see what title or franchise he was from, with Nwodim asking what the Pumpinks “deal” was, he had little offer – initially.
“Annabelle is a doll possessed by a demon. David S. Pumpkins is…” she continued.
“Take it one day at a time!” Hanks’ Pumpkins replied.
Soon after, Nwodim, Harlow, and Dismukes meet the Pumpkins again – this time with an introduction from Kruger – before SNL The Halloween logo finally reveals where he’s from.
“And where do I come from?” he asked his skeleton duo. “Ibiza!” they shouted back before Pumpkins asked, “Preguntas? “when the door closes.
“Is he from Spain?” Dismukes replied. “He doesn’t even have an accent!”
Pumpkins first appeared on the show in 2016, becoming a fan favorite, leading to Hanks returning to NBC’s sketch show multiple times. Bill Gates at one point impersonated a character, and SNL even produced an animated short titled “The David S. Pumpkins Animated Halloween Special.”
