Tony Khan wears an excellent Ring of Honor PPV

Now, it’s pretty standard, bordering on the norm, that Tony Khan will pay per view whenever he needs to. And now with many companies. Last Saturday, it was Ring of Honor’s turn, with “Die before humiliation. And by all means, it’s a bigger bang. Not perfect – rarely a perfect show – but definitely highly entertaining with some classic matches. You know you have something when Claudio Castagnoli, possibly the industry’s most beloved “underdog” – you’d be hard-pressed to find a fan who thinks he’s used to his potential – wins the title. his first single open program. But when you have a second match between FTR vs. Wear your Briscoes card in your holster, that will always end the show.

Even the two “side” matches – Dalton Castle and The Boys vs. The Ri Right and Wheeler Yuta vs. Daniel Garcia – was rocked, although the ensuing match suffered a bit from what Castagnoli-Jonathan Gresham did because it simply didn’t go on long enough. But the feeling of wanting more is always preferable to the feeling that something is coming. The shows produced by Tony Khan almost never have a match that feels too long and thus never make the shows even when they go up to about four hours like sometimes AEW PPVs do. .

But watching Death Before Dishonor – and after – one can’t help but wonder what the exact plan for ROH is. Because watching PPV, it doesn’t feel any different from AEW PPV. But will ROH be another offshoot of AEW or will it become something with its own feel and style?

It’s important to remember what ROH is before it starts to degrade, eventually leading to it having to fold up and be available for purchase by Khan. It’s the company, when Bryan Danielson, CM Punk, Kenny Omega, and even Seth Rollins were there, it was about in-ring work, or employment rates. That’s where the smaller guys can thrive; type will never take the time of day from WWE (at least before HHH remade NXT). It focuses on guys who can only make great matches first and foremost, and worries about other things after that.

It’s the company that has wrestlers from Japan and Mexico and everywhere come to show fans all kinds of wrestlers that are out there. It was able to maintain its popularity for a while by becoming the American wing of the Bullet Club as the Bullet Club gained popularity, where Omega, The Young Bucks and Finn Balor would wash their faces on these shores. after all their titles in Japan.

Except… AEW is all that now, and it’s all of that with a big TV deal the old ROH never had. ROH begins to run out of oxygen when all the people it can trust to keep it involved are instead part of the AEW list. The appeal of AEW is that it’s a job rating agency; it’s the company that only cares about making good matches and telling clear stories. That is the replacement. Where does that leave the ROH?

It’s hard to know what it will be like when we don’t know exactly what its schedule will be like. Khan is still looking for a TV deal for the company. He has ruled out making it an AEW version of the old NXT, claiming that “Dark” and “Dark: Elevation” on the company’s YouTube channel play such roles. But it’s hard to see how a bunch of squash matches – essentially those two shows included – actually work. That idea shouldn’t really be ruled out, as it would give the ROH a distinct identity along with its AEW cousin. In the opposite direction, it is difficult to do that when Samoa Joe and Castagnoli are racing for the two biggest titles. They will not host a development program.

That said, Khan has kept both of ROH’s 2022 shows under the three-hour mark, and Death Before Dishonor has only seven games on the main card, which has shaken up the old NXT which had a reputation for keeping things down short and tight when it comes to its biggest show. It makes PPV fights and feuds even bigger.

If Khan just sees ROH as a place to run the same matches and stories with different names, different brands, and different titles, it’s likely overkill. If it’s essentially the same product as AEW and does some sort of TV or streaming deal, Khan runs the risk of the problem most of his fans laugh at WWE – filling four or five hours of television a week instead of three he might be excessive right now. While the FTR-Briscoes II is truly a classic and one that fans will talk about for a long time, it doesn’t differ too much from the Young Bucks-Lucha Brothers from All Out or Menace threatened the trio just a few weeks ago witnessed Swerve In Our Glory gets AEW tag title. They all belong to the same genus. Which is good when they are all at the stratosphere level, but are all ROH’s and should be?

Then again, maybe fans will get as many great matches as possible. There can be two job rating agencies and the ones that love the job will love it as much as they can. It’s all coming from one guy after all, so it’s not too much of a shock that it can look the same. Would fans want someone else to run ROH just to have a sense of diversity? We don’t know if Khan can authorize?

He was wrong in that he lost Jonathan Gresham, who ask to release him after leading the show and losing to Castagnoli. Not that Gresham isn’t the type of performer we see on AEW – highly technical while being small but amazingly powerful – but he has decided to be ROH. He kept that top title while ROH was in the wilds, going wherever he could to defend it. And then when ROH came to life, he was pushed aside. We don’t even see him on AEW TV as much as Jay Lethal or Satnam Singh or Sonjay Dutt, and all of those are as interesting as an ironing board. It seems unfair.

There’s still plenty of time and a TV deal to find for Khan to identify ROH. It will be very curious to know what other cards he has to play, or if he plays anything.
