Top Five Sporting Events of 2022
2022 has been a fantastic year for sports, and with some major sporting events still to come, there is plenty to look forward to before the calendar ends. Here is a look at the top sporting events of 2022.
Winter Olympics (Beijing, China)
Back in February, Beijing hosted the Winter Olympics. It was the first time a city had hosted both the Summer and Winter versions of the Games. There were a record 109 events across five different disciplines at the multi-sport event.
It was a great battle between Norway, Germany, China, and the United States for the most gold medals in Beijing 2022. Norway came out on top in the table with 16 golds, the most by any nation at a Winter Games.
The Open (St Andrews, Scotland)
The Open Championship is always a tournament the world’s leading players relish participating in, but even more so when it is held at St Andrews, the Home of Golf. The links course in Scotland presents a great challenge, and it was Australian Cameron Smith who prevailed, getting around in 268 shots (-20 to par).
Smith, Cameron Young, and Rory McIlroy were all competing for the famous Claret Jug on the final Sunday in Scotland. The Australian golfer held his nerve the best to win his first Major Championship in the sport.
Commonwealth Games (Birmingham, England)
Held in Birmingham, the 2022 Commonwealth Games was the 22nd edition of the event. We saw some of the best athletes in their respective sports compete for gold medals.
A total of 72 nations participated across 280 events, making it the largest Games in history. There were some memorable moments, including Victor Kiplangat getting lost in the marathon before going on to prevail and Ozzy Osbourne performing during the closing ceremony in Birmingham.
T20 World Cup (Australia)
The T20 World Cup has been full of surprises. Hosts and defending champion Australia were eliminated in the Super 12s. There were also wins for Ireland over England, Zimbabwe over Pakistan, and Namibia over Sri Lanka.
It has been great to see the biggest hitters in T20 cricket put on a great show in the shortest format of the game. This tournament has also shown the associate members in the sport are progressing well.
FIFA World Cup (Qatar)
The most-watched sports tournament on the planet is the FIFA World Cup, so there is a lot of excitement about the 2022 event in Qatar. Not only can you watch the World Cup with traditional broadcasters, but the games are also available to be streamed online, with many bookmakers showing every match in Qatar. Brazil are the +500 favorite to prevail this year, while England and France are the two countries with the next best chance at 15%, based on the outright odds.
The World Cup is a great celebration for football fans. They come together every four years, as do the best players whose countries have qualified for the 32-team event. Every World Cup ends up being memorable and at the end of it, the winners add their names to history.
When we look back at 2022 in years to come, there will be a lot of great sporting memories that we will reflect on with fondness.
