Toronto police put more than 200 members on unpaid leave

TORONTO – The Toronto Police Department has laid off more than 200 employees without pay after they failed to comply with the terms of its immunization duty.

In a statement released Tuesday afternoon, TPS confirmed that it has placed 205 members, representing 2.7% of its entire workforce, on leave “indefinitely” for refusing to disclose their status. their vaccines or because they have not been vaccinated.

Affected personnel include 117 uniformed officers and 88 civilian employees.

TPS says that “if and when” affected employees are fully vaccinated and disclose their updated status, they will be able to return to work.

“Our goal remains to ensure the health and safety of our members, our workplace and the public we serve,” Interim Director James Ramer said in a statement. “As we do every day, service is taking the front line and responding first to ensure public safety is not compromised during this time. I want to assure the public that the service is doing its part to protect the communities we serve and thank our members for being immunized. ”

The Toronto Police Department says that nearly 98% of its 7,415 employees who have disclosed their vaccine status are in compliance with the policy.

It says that of those people, about 98% are fully vaccinated.

The announcement that more than 200 members have been placed on unpaid leave comes about four months after the policy was first announced.

The City of Toronto also has its own mandate to vaccinate its employees and has so far placed more than 500 individuals on unpaid leave with the intention of having cause termination by the New Year if they still fail to comply. policy.
