Toyota Go all about performance at this year’s Tokyo Auto Salon, and the company’s efforts aren’t limited to gasoline-powered cars. Thus we get the Toyota bZ4X GR Sport Concept. Yes, the name is now even more like a fax machine with the “GR” attached to the end of the bZ4X.
If you have seen the news on Concept Subaru Solterra STI, then you might have assumed this was inevitable from Toyota. After all, what one of these mechanical twins does will almost certainly result in the other getting involved as well. Unfortunately, Toyota’s modifications to the bZ4X are similar to those of the Solterra, in that they are narrow in scope and don’t add much in terms of performance.
In total, Toyota says it has added larger tires, sport seats and matte black exterior panels. And that’s all. Nothing has been done to the electric powertrain, and the suspension is the same as before.
That’s not what we’ve come to expect from the GR, but since this is called “GR Sport”, the changes are mostly related to looks. Large wheels and tires definitely give intersection a more menacing look, but what we really wanted was more performance from the electric powertrain. Model made to America reaches a maximum of 214 hp with all-wheel drive. We can hope that Toyota will one day expand this package with an actual GR model for the production version of the bZ4X with the GR badge on it.
