TRAI told Moot mechanism to show caller name based on KYC, consultation will start in few months

Telecom regulator TRAI will soon begin consultations on framing a mechanism so that a caller’s KYC-based name flashes on phone screens when someone calls, according to a top official.

Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of India (MALE) has received references to initiate similar consultations from the Ministry of Telecommunications (DoT).

The consultation on the matter is expected to begin in a few months, said TRAI President, PD Vaghela.

“We have just received the reference and we will start work on this soon. The KYC name will appear when someone calls,” Vaghela said.

TRAI has been thinking about similar lines, but now with specific reference from the telecommunications department, this work will begin soon.

“The mechanism will allow the name to appear on the phone screen, matching KYC carried out by telecom companies, according to DoT norms,” ​​added Vaghela.

This move is significant as the mechanism will help identify callers according to their KYC (Know Your Customer) and offer greater accuracy and transparency than some caller identification apps based on on community sourcing data.

The sources said that once the framework for the new KYC-based mechanism is finalized, the identification will become clearer and legally usable. It will also have a ripple effect, leading to data wiping on community sourcing apps as there will be KYC links.

When asked if the process would be kept voluntary, the sources said it was too early to discuss the modalities as many aspects would be up for discussion at the consultation stage.

TRAI has also implemented blockchain technology to limit unsolicited commercial communications (UCC) or spam calls and messages.

Experts say that the KYC-based caller identification mechanism will protect users against the increasing cases of scams and spam calls.
