Train derailed in Hiram causing minor injuries, investigation underway | News
HIRAM, Ga. (CBS46) – Investigators are working to understand what caused a train to derail, sending two crew members on board with minor injuries to the hospital.
Officials said the train went off the tracks in Hiram around 10:30 p.m. Saturday. The train goes from Atlanta to Chattanooga.
Connor Spielmaker, Norfolk Southern’s Director of Media Relations, said, “The ship was led by three locomotives, the lead locomotive, on which our crew sailed, capsized. Two other locomotives and seven out of 88 carriages also derailed but remained upright.”
Investigators said some fuel spilled but was contained, and they do not expect any environmental impact.
CBS46 News said the crew members were discharged from the hospital on Sunday morning and crews had begun the cleanup process.
“We are incredibly grateful for the quick response from Hiram Police and the Paulding County Fire Department in helping our crew and ensuring safety at the scene,” said Spielmaker.
The results of the investigation will be reported to the Federal Railroad Administration, according to officials.
