Transfer Hackers Add Support Pak Controller to N64’s Online Library

Nintendo 64

One feature missing from Switch Online’s Nintendo 64 library is Controller Pak support. Previously, it acted as a memory card and could be used to store and transfer save and is different data (such as time trial specter in Mario Kart 64).

While it can’t be used in the Switch’s N64 emulator, the data reveals how Controller support has been around for some time. And while it’s not, official enabled (at least for now), community hacker LuigiBlood recently shared how to do it, leading to the following demonstration:

Unfortunately, this isn’t possible on a retail Nintendo Switch (in other words, you’ll need a hack) and even then, there’s going to be some trouble. When the games are reset, the ghost data seems to disappear – although the save state version will stay the same.

Nintendo’s most recent update to the N64 library added Rare’s classic 3D background Banjo-Kazooie and fix some simulation problems in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. If we’re lucky, we might see Controller Pak support one day official added to Switch Online’s N64 library.
