Trey Lance fails to impress the 49ers coaching staff?

The San Francisco 49ers haven’t been able to deal with Jimmy Garoppolo this season, and it’s possible their failure to find a suitor will work out for the best. They might still need him, after all.

NFL reporter Matt Lombardo said Thursday that he’s heard the 49ers’ coaching staff are unhappy with the Trey Lanceof development. While it has been assumed that Lance will take over as the team’s starter next season, that plan may not come to fruition.

A lot can change over the course of a season, but Lance is clearly a raw prospect. He has little experience at the university level. That’s always been seen as a potential problem, and it’s possible he’s simply not ready to take over as an NFL starter.

If that were the case, the Niners would not be inclined to trade Garoppolo. The veteran player just led them to the NFC Championship Game last season and has a Super Bowl on his résumé. Garoppolo probably wants to play for a team that hasn’t had a great first-round record before, but not many teams are looking for starting midfielders.

Have an important issue that likely prevented the Niners from trading Garoppolo. If Lance can’t show he’s ready to take over the team’s attack, it’s entirely possible Garoppolo could enter 2022 as a starter again.
