Trudeau: Putin ‘systematically targeted civilians’

On Sunday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Canada was helping with the investigation of war crimes in Ukraine, suggesting that Russian President Vladimir Putin is deliberately targeting civilians as his forces continue to attack the neighboring country. .

Appearing on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Trudeau said the images emerging from towns like Bucha were “appalling.”

He told CNN’s Jake Tapper: “It’s clear that Putin is systematically targeting civilians, whether it’s hospitals, train stations or maternity wards.

“This is one of the reasons Canada was one of the first countries to call on the international criminal court to look into Putin’s war crimes. We are providing investigative assistance, we are building the case so people realize that it is not just a terrible mistake to violate another country’s sovereignty and create global instability. huge impact on energy and food prices around the world, but also a series of war crimes that Putin is deliberately committing for which he should be held accountable.”

As Russian forces retreated from the attack on Kyiv to focus on other areas, Ukrainian forces were able to retake towns once occupied by Russia. Photos of bodies lying on the streets of Bucha and reports from survivors depicting Russian soldiers killing civilians without provocation have chilled the international community.

There are also reports of Russian soldiers raping and abusing Ukrainian civilians.

A member of Ukraine’s Parliament and leader of Ukraine’s liberal and pro-European Holos Party appeared on CTV News Channel’s Power Play last Monday to describe what she saw while on tour. in Bucha, calling it a “complete genocide”.

Trudeau did not say on Sunday if he believes it is genocide, saying it remains “to be determined.”

“The messages that we are seeing, the stories of what Russian soldiers are doing, are not just killing civilians, but using sexual violence and systematic rape to destabilize and influence them. The greatest possible negative for the Ukrainian people, is completely unforgivable and unacceptable,” he said. “And that is why the global community will and is responding so strongly.”

On Saturday, the federal government announced it would adopt more measures to support Ukrainian refugees arriving in Canada, including charter flights, temporary hotel accommodation and short-term income support.
