TSA officer jumps over carousel to save life of choking baby at Newark Liberty International Airport

NEWARK, New Jersey (WABC) – A newly recruited TSA officer with 10 years of EMT experience saved the life of a choking infant at Newark Liberty International Airport.

TSA officer Cecilia Morales heard people screaming for help and knew she had to act quickly.

When a mother lifted her 2-month-old son from his car seat to get him through security, she realized her baby wasn’t breathing.

Those who were with her were unable to help, and she screamed for help.

Morales, a trained emergency medical technician (EMT) with 10 years of experience serving in several northern New Jersey towns, shouted instructions for mothers.

“But she was very worried, and I knew if I didn’t get through that, it wouldn’t turn out well,” she said. “I jumped over the roller of the carousel at the checkpoint, and she gave birth to me. I did the Heimlich infant maneuver on it.”

She held the child carefully to keep his airway clear, then she placed him face down on her arm and patted him on the back.

She got no response, so she tried again. The second time, he started breathing again.

‘The mother was so nervous and shocked to hold her son that I took the child to walk through the metal detector,’ she said.

There, they wait for the pediatric EMT to arrive to give the baby oxygen a short time later.

Morales, a Newark resident who joined TSA in late October, had previously performed Heimlich on adults and children as an EMT, but this was her first time performing the technique to save an infant’s life.

“Two months on the job and she really is a life saver,” said Thomas Carter, TSA’s Director of Federal Security in New Jersey. “Officer Morales’ quick response and action helped ensure that this family enjoyed a happy holiday. Her actions were inspirational.”

Morales said watching the crash replay was a new experience.

“I watched the video afterwards,” she said. “This is the first time I’ve seen myself in action, saving a life. It was amazing to watch. I feel that my training and experience has continued.”

TSA officials commended her response.

“If Officer Morales hadn’t used her critical thinking, knowledge, and responsiveness, we would have ended badly,” said TSA Director Ayrana Frazier. “At this point, Officer Morales is selfless, and her priority is to save a life. We are proud to call her ours.”
