Ukraine calls on the United Nations and the Red Cross to investigate the deaths of prisoners of war

Unverified video shows a destroyed building with damaged bunk beds and badly burned bodies.

The exact details of what happened at the camp, which is controlled by Russian-backed separatists in the Donetsk People’s Republic, remain unclear.

Zelenksy joined Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba in calling for the Red Cross and the United Nations to intervene and investigate.

The prisoners held at the facility – many of whom are believed to have been arrested while guarding the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol – should have been protected by guarantees guaranteed by both organisations.

“It was a deliberate Russian war crime, a deliberate mass murder of Ukrainian prisoners of war,” Zelensky said.

“Russia has proven by many terrorist attacks that it is the biggest source of terrorism in the world today.”

The Red Cross said it had requested access to the prison so it could help evacuate and treat the 130 Ukrainian prisoners believed to have been injured in the attack.

Russia put the number of wounded at 75 and the death toll at 40.

The Red Cross said in a statement: “Our priority right now is to ensure that the injured receive life-saving treatment and that the bodies of those killed are disposed of properly.

“We have requested access to ascertain the condition and health of all those present at the scene at the time of the attack. We are also contacting the families, apprehending their requests. their requests and questions.

“All prisoners of war, wherever they are held, are protected under international humanitarian law. They are no longer part of the war and should not be attacked. The ICRC was able to visit a prisoners and other detainees, but not granted access to visit all of them.”

Ukraine’s new prosecutor general, Andriy Kostin, said he had ordered officials to open a war crimes investigation into the killings.
