Ukraine needs more help from Canada: Senior official
HALIFAX – A senior Ukrainian government official is urging Canada to increase support for the Eastern European country as it faces a new threat from Russian forces along its border.
Oleksiy Danilov, secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, said additional support is needed to protect the country as Russia builds up troops and military equipment near Ukraine.
He warned that Russia’s actions threaten the peace and security of not only Ukraine but the whole world and could spark a war unless swift action is taken.
Canada is currently operating a training mission in Ukraine, which is expected to operate through the end of March 2022.
Danilov said he is confident Canada will renew its mission and hopes cooperation between the countries will be strengthened.
His comments in the interview at the Halifax International Security Forum came as Ukraine stepped up efforts to seek NATO membership.
