Ukraine says newborn baby killed in attack near Zaporizhzhia city | Russia-Ukraine war News

The baby’s mother, who was pregnant during the Ukraine war, was pulled from the wreckage alive.

A rocket attack overnight hit a maternity hospital in southern Ukraine, killing a newborn baby, Ukrainian authorities said, blaming Russia.

According to Ukraine’s emergency services on Wednesday, the baby’s mother, who had been pregnant during the war, and a doctor were pulled from the rubble.

“At night, Russian monsters launched huge rockets into the small maternity ward of the hospital in Vilniansk. Grief filled our hearts – a baby who had just seen the light of day was killed. Rescuers are working at the site,” the regional governor, Oleksandr Starukh, wrote on the Telegram messaging app.

The alleged Russian raid in Vilniansk, near the city of Zaporizhzhia, adds to the terrible damage that hospitals and other medical facilities – as well as their patients and staff – have suffered in the course of the conflict. Moscow’s invasion.

The latest tragedy brings back memories of the March 9 air raid smash the maternity hospital in the currently occupied port city of Mariupol, in which a pregnant woman and her child died.

Photos posted by Starukh showed thick smoke rising from the rubble, as emergency workers swept across the pitch-black night sky.

The baby, the mother and the doctor were the only people in the room at the time.

Emergency services said the two-story building was destroyed.

Andriy Yermak, the head of Ukraine’s presidential office, condemned the attack in a Telegram post.

Referring to the Russian forces that invaded Ukraine on 24 February as “terrorists”, he said that Russia would be held responsible for “every Ukrainian life”.

The war-torn nation is bracing for one of its harshest winters, as the coldest season begins with Russian attacks aimed at destroying vital energy facilities.

The outage is expected to last for months and threaten to undermine key services.

“On average, about 900 children are born every day into a precarious life. “The chaos of war poses a serious threat to these mothers and babies,” said Sonia Khush, country director of Save the Children in Ukraine. “We hear about women who go into early labor because they are stressed and scared all the time.

“At the beginning of the war, many pregnant women were forced to give birth in basements or bunkers. Now, we are seeing women giving birth in overcrowded hospitals, far from family members and in countries that host refugees from Ukraine. Even though there are fewer women giving birth in a bunker than earlier this year, their pregnancy is just as stressful.”

Vilniansk is located in the northern part of the Ukrainian-controlled Zaporizhia region and about 500 kilometers southeast of the Ukrainian capital, Kiev.

Other parts of Zaporizhia are held by Russia, and it is one of four regions of Ukraine that Russia tried to officially annex in September after referendums that were internationally condemned as illegal and pointless .
