The University of Washington is joining three other research universities as part of a National Football League program designed to collect data and help inform head injury prevention in ball sport. stone.

UW players will have the opportunity to wear mouth guards with sensors that are tailored to the client. Players at the universities of Alabama, North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Wisconsin also participated.

The sensors collect kinetic data, including impact speed, direction, force, position and severity, according to NFL Announcement on Tuesday. The federation uses data to work towards reducing injuries and reducing head impacts in general. Some information indicates rule changes or improvements to better-performing equipment, such as location-specific helmets.

“We are excited to be part of this collaborative player safety initiative,” said Dr. Kimberly Harmon, professor of family medicine, orthopedics, and sports medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine. “I look forward to collecting data to ultimately improve the protection of football players from head injury at all levels – youth, high school, college and professional.”

The NFL launched a mouthguard sensor program in 2019 as part of the league’s $60 million commitment to Engineering Roadmap to promote health and safety initiatives. Mouthguards are currently used by players at 10 NFL clubs, and the partnership with these four universities is expected to expand to other colleges in the future.

This isn’t the first time Huskies have turned to mouth guards to measure head impacts. In 2016, UW helped test a built device by Kirkland, Wash-based i1 Biometrics.
