University of Pittsburgh sports coach donates kidney to 4-year-old – WPXI

PITTSBURGH – Daniel George lives life like most 4-year-olds. He’s an energetic orb that wants to show you all his toys and absolutely adores his little sister. But a few months ago, Daniel’s parents discovered that he needed a new kidney.

Daniel was born with chronic kidney disease. For a while, that was something George’s family could manage, but earlier this year doctors said he needed a transplant.

Bobby George, Daniel’s father, said: ‘It always kept us around because we didn’t know what was going to happen next. “And they can’t give us a definite answer. So it just kept going and going. And then finally, we had the answer.”

The answer came to Molly Trott. Trott is the athletic coach of the University of Pittsburgh track and field team. She knows Daniel’s mother, Mary Beth Daniel, who is a strength coach for the Pitt volleyball team. That’s how Molly met Daniel.

“I couldn’t imagine myself going through that. So I wanted to see if I could be of any help,” Trott said.

Trott underwent two days of kidney exams, CT scans and dozens of blood tests. A few weeks later, she received a call that completely surprised her. She is the right person to donate her kidney to Daniel.

“My initial response was just ‘wow,’ where there were some awkward pauses and then I just said ‘wow,’ then there were more awkward pauses and I said ‘Yeah. Let me figure some things out,” Trott told Channel 11’s Jenna Harner.

Then it was time for Trott to tell George’s family.

Trott emotionally recounted the story.

“I just said, ‘How would Danny like a new kidney for Christmas? ,” said Trott. “After that, there was a time (Daniel’s mother) didn’t believe what she was hearing. So I kept saying ‘No, this is true, they told me I’m a couple’, and then I told her I wanted to do it. “

Mary Beth Daniel took the story from there.

“I just stopped in the aisle. I said so, are you serious? This is real? ‘ said Mary Beth.

To help a 4-year-old during a scary time, George’s family told Daniel that Trott was giving him a new “Sidney the Kidney”. When Harner asked him what he thought about (that), he laughed and gave her two thumbs up.

Harner asked Trott why she felt the need to do this. “Because 20 years from now, he’ll be cold as someone recovering from cancer or he might just be a wonderful human who wants to spread love in the world, just like I’m trying to do. he. Thinking about his potential that way, it just makes it all worth it. ”

On December 7, Trott and Daniel will both undergo surgery for the transplant. That’s what Trott believes is established and meant to be. The first day she was able to get tested was her father’s birthday, and the surgery date was close to her grandmother’s birthday.

“People always say they love Pitt for everyone,” Trott said. “Getting to know Mary Beth and Bobby, and the way they’ve opened their arms to me throughout this process, it makes you emotional to realize how much love there is in the world.”

Mary Beth Daniel couldn’t hold back her tears as she explained how much this gift means to her and her family.

“You can’t put into words that someone is saving your child’s life and making it better.”
