Unleash creator productivity with Open Cloud

One of the main priorities for developing Roblox is to give our community of creators the freedom to securely access their Roblox resources from anywhere, allowing for flexibility and efficiency. more with the power of Open Cloud. This technology allows creators to find and build any app they need on Roblox through standardized web APIs, streamlining tasks like analytics, customer support, testing, and publishing. version, or even allow them to develop more interesting features into their experience, such as automatically changing users’ Roblox Team Ratings based on activities in their experience.

Build apps with open cloud API

While building and operating their experiences on Roblox, creators often create a lot of resources (e.g. 3D models, scripts, and user data) that can only be accessed through apps. Roblox first-party applications such as Roblox Studio. In many cases, however, creators need to programmatically access their resources from outside of those apps. For example, when dealing with customer support requests, creators typically check and update user profile data, but must use Studio or build a special feature in their experience to do like that. No solution is ideal and it wastes unnecessary time that could be spent building interesting content. To address this issue, some creators have developed tools to invoke Roblox public endpoints using cookies for authentication, which is not a best practice due to security risks. relate to.

Open Cloud addresses these challenges by providing secure default authentication and authorization methods, along with standardized web APIs. Our first step is to support Publishing Places API and API keys. Like a passport to a foreign country, an API key allows apps to authenticate to the Roblox Cloud and perform actions on behalf of the creator. The Place Publishing API allows creators to automate the experience publishing process. For example, it can be connected to a GitHub Actions and automatically push the places file to Roblox Cloud after a successful integration test. Standardized APIs will reduce the learning curve and ensure backward compatibility to reduce the maintenance burden for application developers.

To get started, you can now generate an API key on Creator Dashboard and write a script using the Places Publish API to push your latest places files to Roblox Cloud. Security comes first, so when generating an API key, you can set granular permissions by choosing experiences, resources, and specific permissions like read or write. In addition, you can add a list of restricted IPs using the API key and set an explicit expiration date.

Look forward

Besides adding more APIs, we also plan to support another industry standard: OAuth2. This will give developers the opportunity to build third-party apps and share them with the rest of the community. We’re excited to hear how our community will leverage these tools to streamline their workflow and take their business to the next level.
