In a busy urban area in Shenzhen, China, I watched a drone land at a kiosk to deliver the iced tea I ordered half an hour earlier. The delivery service is run by Meituan, China’s most popular food delivery platform, which has been making regular drone deliveries to city residents for the past year and a half.
What sets Meituan apart from its US peers is that it uses drones in the most potentially challenging environments: dense urban populations. For some Shenzhen residents and suppliers, drone deliveries are no longer a novelty—it’s part of their daily routine.
