US animator Chris Ware on being inspired by everyday human actions


His elaborate, careful depictions of modern life have earned him awards in the US and UK, as well as the Angoulême International Comics Festival Grand Prize in 2021. Chris Ware sits down with FRANCE 24 when his cartoons and graphic novels were displayed at the Center’s Public Library Pompidou in Paris. He tells us how a childhood immersed in Charles Schulz’s “Peanuts” comic fostered a fascination for the “mechanical nature” of a story told in words and pictures. We also discuss how the intimate relationship between writer and reader that makes books an object of subversive power can still annoy those who seek to censor alternative points of view.
