Peter Navarro faces two counts of contempt of Congress for failing to cooperate with the investigation of the Capitol riots.

Peter Navarro, former adviser to the former President of the United States Donald Trumpwas charged with two counts of contempt of Congress for failing to cooperate with a US congressional committee investigating the January 6, 2021 Capitol riots.

The US Justice Department announced the charges on Friday, saying that Navarro will make his first appearance in court in Washington, DC later in the day.

“Navarro, 72, was charged with one count of contempt related to his refusal to appear for removal and another count of his refusal to produce documents, despite a subpoena subpoenaed from the House Select Committee to investigate the January 6 attack on the United States Capitol,” the Justice Department said in a statement.

Each charge carries up to a year in prison and a maximum fine of $100,000, the Justice Department said.

The US House of Representatives is controlled by Democrats Vote in April to hold Navarro, who served as Trump’s economic adviser, and Dan Scavino, a former communications aide, in criminal contempt after they failed to comply with requests for information.

Navarro has previously argued that his communications are protected under executive privilege, a legal principle intended to protect the president’s communications.

Earlier this week, he filed a lawsuit asking a federal judge to block the Justice Department from pursuing charges against him for defying Congress.

Trump Supporters brutally violated Capitol Hill on January 6 to block President Joe Biden’s confirmation of election victory, halting proceedings and sending lawmakers into hiding. Five people, including a Capitol police officer, died in or as a result of the incident.

Democrats have said that the riot was an uprising on purpose reverse election results and keep Trump in power. House of Commons Trump is impeached in his final days in office for “inciting” violence.

Trump spoke to his supporters at a rally near the White House before the riots, repeating false accusations that the election was “stolen” and urge the crowd to “fight like hell”.

The January 6 congressional committee sought testimony and records from top Trump aides and family members.

The committee conducted lengthy interviews with Trump’s daughter Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner, this early year. Both have served as key White House advisers.

Navarro became the second former Trump aide to face criminal charges for failing to cooperate with the committee January 6. Last November, the Justice Department indicted the former chief strategist of the White House Steve Bannon with similar fees.

Late last year, the House of Representatives also voted to elect the former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows In contempt. Meadows and Scavino have not been charged by the Justice Department.
