US Supreme Court discharge will officially retire on Thursday
WASHINGTON –
Liberal US Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer will officially retire on Thursday, paving the way for President Joe Biden’s appointee, Ketanji Brown Jackson, to be sworn in for life to replace him, the court said on Wednesday.
Breyer, 83, has been in court since 1994 and announced plans to retire in January. He will retire at noon (ET) on Thursday shortly after the court issues a final verdict in his current term. Jackson would become the first black woman to serve in the nation’s top judiciary.
“It is my great honor to be involved as judge in the effort to uphold the Constitution and the Rule of Law,” Breyer said in a letter to Biden.
