Video: Why you shouldn’t deep-fry frozen turkey in oil

SASKATOON – Thinking of deep-frying a frozen turkey at your next family dish?

It may be best to avoid. Ahead of American Thanksgiving, Mississippi firefighters shared dramatic footage of why people might want to continue cooking turkey the old-fashioned way.

The video shows a firefighter dipping a frozen turkey in hot oil, and the bird instantly catches fire.

“The last thing we want to do is show up on Thanksgiving where someone gets hurt,” Sheriff Billy Kelley said after the protest in a Facebook post. He said the video shows “what not to do”.

Kelley urges people to completely defrost and dry turkey before cooking.

The video released by the Gulfport mayor’s office also offers some tips, including making sure chefs cook their turkeys to the right temperature. They also advise people not to deep-fry turkey in an enclosed area, under a roof or under a tree, as an outbreak can occur.
