Vigil held in honor of 11-year-old shot dead in Mobile

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA– It’s been a bad week for Mobile city as innocent children’s lives are lost to gun violence.

A vigil was held on Friday afternoon for one of the victims, Lequinten Morrissette, 11 years old, was hit by a stray bullet in his own home.

It’s been difficult for the whole family, because they’re still in shock. But none more so than his mother, Laquita Bradley, who was robbed of so many things.

One thing she said on Friday is that her baby is not dead, it will always live in her heart.

“My baby is not healed yet. Lequinten is not dead. My baby is sleeping. He’s not dead to me, he’s sleeping,” Bradley said.

Bradley says she’s trying to stay healthy after losing her only child.

“It will never be like I gave birth on my birthday. It will never be the same, he died on Memorial Day,” Bradley said. “It will never be the same. But I will have to stay strong and deal with it. “

Several conversations this week have revolved around gun violence in Mobile, especially when it comes to black people losing their lives.

Mobile Police Sergeant John Young has been very personal after making an emotional plea to the community this week.

“There’s a sub-culture of gun violence in Mobile City with young black men and it’s time for us to make it dangerous,” said Sergeant Young.

Sergeant Young said some of the victims were as young as four years old.

“Our 19, 19, 18, 17, 16, 14, 11 and 4-year-old killers were all black children,” Young said. “When will we as a city wake up.”

Although Bradley says nothing can be done to bring her son back, she says she takes comfort in knowing he’s away from the chaos.

“I am numb because my baby is no more. But I actually feel pretty good that he’s in heaven. He’s in a good place, he’s in a better place. His life was lost too soon but he is in a better place,” she said.

Bradley says she plans to honor Lequinten every year on his birthday.

19-year-old Cameron Walker was arrested for murder.

Police are still looking for at least one more suspect.
