Viola Davis, Tyler Perry, Justin Timberlake Reaction – The Hollywood Reporter

Viola Davis, Tyler Perry, Justin Timberlake and Questlove are among a number of Hollywood celebrities sharing social media reactions to Tire Nichols, who died earlier this month following a scuffle with Department officers. Memphis police during a traffic stop in Tennessee.

Body cameras and surveillance video of the January 7 stop, released Friday, showed the beating that left the 29-year-old hospitalized and died of his injuries. The footage shows Nichols telling officers, “I’m just trying to get home,” and also shouting for his mother. On Thursday, five police officers, who were fired, were charged with murder.

Perry took to Instagram to share a photo of Nichols and describe his own conflicting feelings about whether to see the footage of the incident. “A lot of people can’t imagine it happening to them because honestly, it never will,” he wrote of how he initially wanted to avoid the video. “I’m determined to try once to see what that space is like, I will cover my ears and not let it out.”

Explaining that his goal was “unachievable,” he continued, “So today I will cry, I will be depressed, I will curse, I will resent, I will want to burn a trash, I’ll hurt, I’ll let my heart break for his family, I’ll groan to his tenor mix from my own experience that every Black man ever calling for safety in my mother’s arms, I will scream out loud.

Debbie Allen, Tina Knowles and Kym Whitley were among those praising Perry’s post in the comments section. Knowles wrote that she also struggled with whether or not to watch it but ended up “forced to watch it” and described what she considers “heartbreaking”.

Davis and Niecy Nash both took to Instagram to share a black square that reads in white, “I’m just trying to get home.” In the caption of their identical posts is a message attributed to MeToo founder Tarana Burke that reads: “Sometimes a hope. Sometimes a prayer. Sometimes a disappointment. Sometimes a fear. Sometimes it’s impossible.” Posts that also added hashtags are here again.

Timberlake, who was born in Memphis, tweeted that he was very hurt and angry. “I stand with my homeland and the people of Memphis as we demand justice and accountability,” he wrote.

Questlove shared several posts and messages about the incident, including one discouraging people from viewing the footage: “For the love of God. Torture P*rn will not serve your soul.

W. Kamau Bell was among a number of social media users who compared the police officer who beat Rodney King in 1991. “I remember the Rodney King attack,” Bell said. tweeted. “I remember a lot of us thinking that the footage would change everything, Finally there is ‘evidence’. Now there is daily footage of police brutality with us. This footage is in HD and usually comes from the police. Nothing changes.”

LeBron James forward a message from activist and podcast host Brittany Packnett Cunningham about systemic racism, provided that all five traffic stop officers are Black. James added, “So realistic!!!”
