James Vince and Ben McDermott claimed a new club record as Hampshire beat Sussex by 22 rounds to finally taste victory in this season’s Vitality Blast.

Vince and McDermott, who crossed 65 and 60 respectively, hit 124 points together to break the Hawks’ best T20 opening to establish a mammoth 199-6 total.

Tim Seifert hit the not-so-stellar 100 mark – and placed 69th with Delray Rawlins – in a bad chase from the Sharks because they never managed to get the proportions needed.

Hampshire have lost their first four games but have dropped out of the bottom group of the Southern group as a result, while Sussex remain fourth after a mixed start.

A switch seems to have struck for the home team after their poor start to the tournament, with aggression being transformed into ground attacks instead of chasing six.

Vince demonstrated this by beautifully stroking the first ball of the match through the covers, which had already been included. This is just one of a series of classic Vince strokes that have helped the home team get off to a successful start.

At the other end, McDermott made his mark with a straight 6 with his more brutal style. It was the first of the Australian’s five maximums, with scores outperforming from straight and mid power.

Vince – who rose to third place previously in Blast this season – reached his first half-century of the season with his 33rd serve, before McDermott followed him four balls faster .

Their stand surpassed Hampshire’s previous best opening stand of 122, set up by Michael Carberry and Mitchell Stokes against Middlesex in 2006, but – two games later – ended when Henry Crocombe vs Vince. This is the nimble youngster the first of three pitches in an impressive outing.

That started the battle against the Sussex average as Hampshire lost four players in 23 runs.

The away team’s excellent capture was the main reason for the momentum of the change; a boundary juggling from Fynn Hudson-Prentice and a spectacular fly-by from Obed McCoy made up for some punching on the ground.

Hampshire accelerated towards the end thanks to Toby Albert’s creativity and Liam Dawson’s late hit to hit their highest Ageas Bowl total since they broke 202 in 2013.

The Sussex chase was never successful. The Hawks were patient before they made their breakthrough in the fourth as Luke Wright joined midway before Ali Orr slipped to wicket goalkeeper McDermott in the back.

Hudson-Prentice rushed to eight from 14 balls before he took the lead over James Fuller. For comparison, the Hampshire is 98-0 at 10th stage, the Sharks are 59-3 and statistically have a one per cent chance of winning.

Ravi Bopara was active in training but Seifert and Rawlins were happy with their 50-ball standing with 24 balls, with New Zealand international Seifert robbing a half-century personally in 36 serves. Rawlins was exhausted and Harrison Ward castled on either side for a brief period of rain.

With the game lost, Seifert stole three six-balls in a row in the final to collect 56 balls in his second T20 century.
