Volkswagen Amarok ute 2023 was caught in Australia

A new generation Volkswagen Amarok was tracked on Australian roads before the first agents arrived in May.

The car, spotted by a reader near Volkswagen Australia headquarters in Sydney, is a mid-range Style that appears to be finished in bright Beige.

The company confirmed in March the first cars touched down for internal launch and training activities, with higher-spec models coming first.

VW also says it has received more than 10,000 expressions of interest and that it is “well positioned” to deliver the “good stuff” of the new generation ute.

Latest Amarok will come from South Africa instead of Argentina, and Australia is expected to continue to be the model’s largest market.

It is expected to compete with T-Roc for the top bill on Volkswagen’s sales charts, as the brand earns money from previous-generation Amarok owners interested in a new model for 12 years.

It will also score with family buyers, who have ruled out the now-defunct first-generation vehicle due to the lack of rear side airbags and active safety tech. The new model has a more complete list of safety suites as standard.

Basically, the new Amarok has been developed on the same platform as the latest version Ford Ranger.

The powertrain lineup will include a 2.0-liter turbo-diesel four-cylinder (in two tunings), a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V6 and a 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine.

While the Ranger will be offered with a 2.3-litre petrol engine in other markets, in Australia it’s diesel only.

That gives the Amarok a differentiator not only from the Ranger but also from its rivals; The few remaining petrol cars in this segment are basic models for fleets.

Volkswagen will offer five trim levels: Core, Life, Style, PanAmericana and Aventura.

Prices start at $50,990 before on-road costs and stretch to $70,990 before on-road in Australia.

The brake towing capacity is up to 3500kg and has a combined total mass of 6500kg. Load capacity up to 1200kg depending on model.

The wading depth has been increased from 500 to 800mm and thanks to the now shorter overhang, the forward approach angle is now 29 degrees, departure angle is 21 degrees and ramp angle is 21 degrees.
