Volvo EX90 battery size balance range, two-way charging

Upcoming Volvo EX90 electric SUV Volvo recently confirmed that it will offer two-way charging and can act as a power backup to power devices on a camping trip, charge other electric vehicles, or even maybe power the house as a backup medium.

While full details on the EX90 have until November 9, when the EX90 officially bows, it is likely that Volvo will use a package equivalent to 111 kwh of the confirmed CATL cell for Polestar 3 will be built with it in South Carolina — good for a range up to 300 miles EPA. Volvo also recently revealed a few details about how this power function works; and Green car report spoke with Olivier Loedel, Volvo’s head of electrification ecosystem, to ask some more specific questions.

One of them has to do with carbon emissions. Volvo has confirmed that the EX90 will offer a larger 100 kWh battery pack. For Volvo and anyone who cares about sustainability, that’s bad, as the larger battery pack complements the car. carbon emissions—Not only is it an extra resource and energy burden to produce, but also emissions during the extra usage period to transport that extra weight for the entire life of the vehicle. So one of those questions is whether Volvo, as a very carbon-conscious automaker, is looking to offset the sizable package with two-way capability.

Based on Loedel’s answer, the answer is yes. “The more renewable energy you use and when you charge the car, the better the carbon footprint of the car,” he said. “And this is where with two-way charging along with different use cases and smart charging, we also support our customers to be more sustainable in their usage phase.”

“On the battery side, when it comes to the EX90, we want to fulfill all of your needs… but we are also aware that you may only use a fraction of it on a daily basis and this is why bidirectional charging can’t bring you significant economic benefits, reducing energy but also more positively supporting the grid,” explains Loedel.

Volvo is currently assessing what this means by carbon numbers, but the results for that and even the savings for the end user can be quite different depending on all sorts of variables related to the energy source. and power grid. In Volvo’s home market, Sweden, customers using time-of-use charging can save 500 euros per vehicle per year. And if you add vehicles to the grid, that figure can go up to 800 euros per vehicle per year.

That’s why, in release, a combination of time-of-use charging and enhanced bidirectional capabilities that can ultimately use your car’s battery to help cushion the sound. bar is missing detail.

Part of the reason is that many of those details will vary by market. The company emphasized that two-way charging will initially only be rolled out in “selected markets,” as the company is currently researching the potential. However, time-of-use charging will be available everywhere, Loedel assures.

As such, the EX90 will launch with all the hardware needed for car-to-home functionality, but Loedel admits that additional equipment will be needed: a two-way charging wall box and a home energy management system. The latter will be connected to the home dashboard, to the cloud and to Volvo.

So far, the only automaker offering such hardware is Ford, with its F-150 Lightning and Ford Charge Station Pro and Home Integration System, which, for $3,895, adds an inverter, Disconnect switch and battery pack for efficient operation Use the truck for backup power at home. Nissan also recently announced an approved plant bidirectional charger for Leaf, in the US, that allows the EV to help buffer the grid. And Hyundai and Lucid announced home energy systems that have so far not been detailed in the United States.

Volvo says it’s looking to make the entire charging (and discharging) process “automatic and fully managed using smart charging in the Volvo Cars app.” That would allow and encourage charging during off-peak hours when the grid is less burdensome and prices are low.

Loedel suggests that, with the automaker’s global plan to go all-electric by 2030, it is moving ahead with a range of products in this area.

And to make sure this works in as many markets as possible, Volvo has prepared its hardware for different versions of two-way charging. That means Volvo will include hardware to run AC or DC with the technology in every EV90.

“We will allow both AC and DC charging and we will continue to monitor this going forward — and it may vary from market to market,” says Loedel. “But those two will be supported, based on the ISO standard.”

That might take some firmware or software updates to tweak, but Volvo is ready for that, too. It is expected to provide over-the-air updates to the EX90 giving access to the vehicle’s entire software and systems.
