Volkswagen’s MEB platform that served as the backbone of the automaker’s electric push will receive several updates over the next few years.

According to VW, the updated version, called MEB+, will incorporate charging and battery updates, as well as an electrical architecture designed to support more advanced driver assistance technology.

VW explains that a new generation of so-called “unit cell” batteries will allow up to 435 miles of range (which can be measured against the gentler European WLTP test cycle). The automaker also claims the MEB+ will “dramatically improve charging times” and could have power ratings of up to 175-200 kW.

The MEB+ overhaul following the “improvements” that VW confirmed earlier this year is underway for car MEB. The platform itself was first details in 2018and the electric vehicle market has changed a lot since then. So maybe it’s time for a bigger set of changes.

It is unclear whether VW mentioned ID lifewhich it previously said is built on top of a simple MEB platform it calls MEB Small.

Two Ford EVs for the European market will be supported by MEB before that, and in the US we will likely have a full-size electric vehicle, followed by van ID.Buzzwill launch in the US much later than in Europe.
