Most of the years we see the emergence of serious wristwatches with leather straps. This year, almost every wrist brings a new gift, such as the unusual Cartier by Paul Mescal, the completely transparent new age sports watch by Michelle Yeoh and the piece by Dwayne Johnson, Totally defies the dress code of a black tie. I haven’t even mentioned Idris Elba’s Gucci watch, which has a diamond carousel.
There are a few explanations for the explosion of Oscar watches. First, more conventional sports watches are now accepted at events like this, which greatly increases choice. Second, celebrity interest in watches seems to be growing along with others. It seems we’re seeing personality on people’s wrists rather than on their clothes. Nearly every watch collection category is on display on Sunday: vintage watches, high-end sports watches, impeccable dress models and stainless steel pins.
