Waukesha Christmas Parade Suspect Says He’s Being ‘Demonized’ in Prison
MILWAUKEE – In his first prison interview since his arrest, Darrell Brooks Jr said he believes he is being “devilted” and treated like a “monster” after police told that he knocked out at least 60 people, killing six, during the Waukesha Christmas Parade last month.
Brooks spoke to Fox News briefly on Wednesday. The media called Brooks a “soft talker.” Brooks did not provide any further details about the engine.
“I just felt like I was turning into a monster – possessed by a demon,” Brooks told Fox News, adding that he felt “dehumanized”.
Michael Ruiz and Stephanie Pagones wrote: “Brooks appeared calm, clear-minded, and took the time to answer each question – even repeating reporters’ questions and answers at times,” Michael Ruiz and Stephanie Pagones wrote.
Two Fox News reporters were the first guests Brooks received. He has not received a visit from his family members. Brooks’ mother Dawn Woods issued a statement earlier on Wednesday to multiple media outlets criticizing the criminal justice system for Brooks’ failure.
“Mental illness is real and the system is broken, it can and must be fixed NOW, not next year or with new laws NOW. A lot of people like Darrell, who have fallen through the cracks because of a broken system that no one cares to fix, can get the help they desperately need,” Woods wrote in the letter, for the first time. received by WDJT-TV.
Brooks said he was “close” with his mother. He hasn’t spoken to any of the families since the marching attack but they spoke earlier that day, he said.
Following the interview, the reporters described the sound of sobbing through the loudspeaker.
Prosecutors charged Brooks with six counts of attempted first-degree murder. He is on $5 million cash bail and faces life in prison if convicted on any of the charges.
He is also a defendant in another Milwaukee County case from 2020, in which he was accused of shooting his nephew and another person.
