Wayne Gretzky collides with Alex Ovechkin for most of the goals on the road

Vancouver, British Columbia –

Alex Ovechkin scored twice, surpassing Wayne Gretzky for the most goals in NHL history, and the Washington Capitals beat the Vancouver Canucks 5-1 on Tuesday night.

Ovechkin has scored 403 of his 793 away goals in his career. Gretzky holds the overall record with 894.

“It’s great that you beat the Great One,” Ovechkin said. “It doesn’t matter what kind of milestone it is. It’s history.”

Anthony Mantha added a goal and an assist for the Capitals (10-11-3). John Carlson and Martin Fehervary also scored, and Darcy Kuemper saved 31 shots.

Nils Hoglander scored for the Canucks (9-11-3), who won three games in a row. Spencer Martin made 23 saves.

“Spencer has been fantastic for us. He was probably a bit like the other players tonight. They weren’t ready to play and that showed on the scoreboard,” Vancouver coach Bruce Boudreau said. .

Ovechkin, 37, nearly scored a hat trick when Vancouver pulled Martin for an additional skater with just over six minutes left, but his rocket shot missed the post.

“I think he’s got 13 goals this year and I’d say eight or nine is like a new record. It’s great,” said Washington center Dylan Strome. “Whenever you get past Wayne Gretzky in anything, it deserves a standing ovation, which he’s received.”

Fehervary was the one who set it, headed high in the Canucks area and into an empty net at 15:57 of the third inning.

Ovechkin overcame Gretzky with a score of 11:52 in the first half, firing a one-shot from the left circle past Martin to give the Capitals a 2-0 lead with his 13th goal of the season.

“On his second goal, it was like, ‘Oh, (Martin) should have scored.’ But I’ve seen (Ovechkin) score 100 like that,” said Boudreau, who coached the Capitals from 2007-11. “He had a shot that found his way in.”

The Russian star striker had his first game at 5:35 of the night, knocking Vancouver defender Quinn Hughes’ stick near the net and firing a quick shot.

“Honestly, it could have been 6-1 after the first half, given the amount of chances (Washington) had,” Boudreau said.

It was Ovechkin’s 135th opening goal, the most for Jaromir Jagr in NHL history.

Capitals coach Peter Laviolette said: “(Ovechkin) played really well in the first half and I think we played really well in the first half so it was great to be out on the pitch and take that leap like that. so. “He definitely took the lead. We knew we needed to have a good first half, have a good game and you need your best players to do that.”

Carlson scored the only goal in the second half, hitting the ball loosely from the low hash at 18:47 to give Washington a 4-1 lead.

“It’s frustrating. Because when you lose the game, it’s never about your competition level and your fighting level,” said JT Miller, center of the Canucks. “It’s frustrating because today they weren’t better than us, they weren’t outperforming our system. They really just beat us and created their own chances.”

NOTE: Washington’s Lars Eller has his 200th career assist. … Miller had one assist, extending his scoring streak to nine games (four goals, seven assists). … The Capitals wiped out a two-match streak of the season. … Vancouver named winger Vasily Podkolzin and defender Jack Rathbone to the Abbotsford Canucks on Monday, then recalled striker Phillip Di Giuseppe from the American Hockey League club on Tuesday.
