‘We hope for the best, son’ – War is near to Ukrainian obstetrics
The Pokrovsk Perinatal Center is the last specialized ward in the eastern Donbas region under Ukrainian control.
The center was about 40km (25 miles) from the nearest front line and it had to carry the fetus during shelling during the war.
Pregnant women say they are worried about where they might give birth, and doctors have observed an increase in preterm births, with 16.5% of babies born prematurely in Pokrovsk since 24 February.
This compares with an average of 9% across Ukraine.
Dr Ivan Tsyganok, head of the centre, said: “In labor is a process that cannot be stopped.”
