Hannukah menorahs usually contains nine candles: eight sacred lamps and a central lamp to light the others (sometimes, without the center light, make eight candles). The eight sacred lamps represent the eight nights that the oil depots burned after the liberation of the Sacred Temple in Jerusalem.
