Weight a minute! Does Publix escape its historic scale?

LAKELAND, Fla. – Yes Iconic scales at Publix will disappear, but the process will be slow and not all at once.

In a Facebook post from August, the Florida-based grocer said its massive industrial scale would one day be a thing of the past.

“The manufacturer discontinued production in 2015, which means that one day – despite our excellent repair shop keeping the rest of our machines in good working order – the Publix scale last will eventually cease operations,” the post said.

The scales, a fixture at Publix for 81 years, were initially placed at the back of the stores but were later moved closer to the entrance.

It is unknown when the scale will finally be removed from the Publix store.

So how – and why – did scales become a thing at Publix?

“Steping on the scale is usually only done during trips to the doctor’s office — or for a small price at your local grocery or retail store. That’s where our founder, George Jenkins, saw an opportunity,” said Publix.

A scale was placed in one of the stores – free for customers – and the grocery chain said it was an instant hit.

So one day the scale will go away, but until then, enjoy guessing your weight as you enter or exit Publix.

Here’s the full text of the Publix Facebook post:

“Have you ever wondered about the historic scale of your Florida Publix? 81 years ago, scales were expensive, cumbersome, and not a common household appliance. Stepping on the scale is usually done only during trips to the doctor’s office – or for a small price at your local grocery or retail store. That’s where our founder, George Jenkins, saw an opportunity.

“Mr. George ordered a brand new personal weighing scale at the very first Publix Supermarket for customers to use for free. It was an instant hit. The customer began their shopping trip by doing so. When they step on the scale, they often guess their weight for fun.

“The manufacturer discontinued production in 2015, which means that one day – despite our excellent repair shop keeping the rest of our machines in excellent condition – the scale Publix will eventually shut down. So next time you visit the Sunshine State, come and step right up! You will see an authentic piece of Florida and Publix history.
