West Side Story Lyricist Stephen Sondheim Dies at 91

Broadway has lost a legend.

Stephen Sondheim, famous composer and lyricist, passed away, his lawyer F. Richard Pappas confirm, follow New York Times. Sondheim is believed to have passed away at his home in Connecticut on Friday, November 26 after celebrating Thanksgiving with friends the day before. Legend of the music scene enjoys 91 years of age.

An icon in the theatrical world, Sondheim has written music and lyrics for beloved shows like Go to the forest and Sweeney Todd and is the author of the lyrics for those who like Gypsy and West story, which Steven Spielberg has adapted into a new film slated for release in December.

For his work of a lifetime, Sondheim has amassed eight Tony Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008, as well as eight Grammy Awards and an Academy Award for Best Original Song. “I have never appreciated awards,” he said in his 1971 Tony Award acceptance speech, “but I must say that it is great to win one.”
