‘Westworld’ actress Aurora Perrineau in That Time-Hopping Twist – The Hollywood Reporter

[This story contains major spoilers for the fourth episode of Westworld season four “Generation Loss.”]

When Aurora Perrineau graces Westworld’At the end of June, she was the only one of the show’s newer cast available to speak to the press.

In a way, the actress – who plays a character called C and has a connection to one of the HBO show’s main storylines revealed at the end of episode four – is a pervert. human, like her mother’s co-stars. But with her introduction in episode three and Sunday night’s reveal, many of Perrineau’s roles are now in the spotlight.

Living in a desert location among a group of people rebelling against the new world order by Charlotte (Tessa Thompson), C is looking for a way to find her father, Aaron Paul’s Caleb, and a weapon that is said to be capable of being used. used against the new lords of mankind.

With the arrival of Jeffrey Wright’s Bernard and Luke Hemsworth of Stubbs, C defies her desert family’s fears and skeptically follows the homeowner and his friend to a site where they excavated. a weapon that is said to be able to stop Charlotte. What – or really who – is lying in the dirt revealing C’s true identity and teasing her potential role in what is now a literal battle for free will.

Perrineau spoke to The Hollywood Reporter at the show’s premiere and then again before Sunday’s episode about joining Westworld family, her character’s big turning point, and what’s next for the humans taking on the role of Charlotte.

As an actor entering the universe of Westworld Where is this kind of Russian doll storytelling?

Honestly, it was a little easier than I thought it would be because my character felt a little bit detached from all those storylines, so I felt like I could get into it a little bit more and it came. from a place full of emotion instead of analysis. place. I think it’s really helpful for me. I feel bad for other people who have said, “Okay, this connects to that and this connects to that.” (Laugh)

How much did you learn about your character’s true identity while on the show?

No. I do not know anything. I get scripts before each episode – you get it right before the episode and then you shoot it. So it’s always a surprise. My first episode, I was like, ‘Oh, I have to work with Jeffrey Wright and Luke Hemsworth. It’s great. ‘ It turns into, ‘OK, cool, I don’t know who this girl is, but that’s fun.’ Then I got the script for four while we were shooting and it was a big surprise. I had no idea. I called one of the producers and I said, ‘Wait a minute, am I Aaron’s daughter?’

So your characterization of her was really shaped starting in episode four.

Yes for sure. I had an idea of what my own core story was for myself that I created three and then when I got the script for four, it revived the things that I was feeling in my mind. think. But then it also gives me more purpose as to why I’m doing what I’m doing, which is incredibly helpful for the rest of the season. It’s nice to know this is why you’re doing these things, instead of just making a random guess.

Your character was clearly young when her father Caleb disappeared, and the way this episode ends, we see your present, but also the world Charlotte built. C has no mother here. Will we have an explanation this season as to why she doesn’t?

Well, in general, you will see what the whole situation was like with all the rebels and why we were all there and what happened. You’ll see some behind-the-scenes happenings.

How much she knows about her father’s fate, especially before the shocking “weapon” – Maeve – they unearth.

I don’t think she knows anything. That’s what she said to [Bernard]: no one believes there is a thing here and I don’t even know if I believe there is a weapon there. I just know that I think my dad is there and that’s my main goal. She doesn’t know. She had heard these rumors, and they had all heard these rumors. It’s like an urban legend about this happening in this place. So I think for her, she just went there to see if her dad was there. She is shocked to see that the weapon is the woman she probably saw in her childhood and doesn’t really know, ‘What kind of weapon is that? I think that’s probably what’s going on. ‘

This volume actually includes Westworld Playback-style storytelling through Caleb’s reveal. Do you know when Is your character related to other storylines?

Honestly, I don’t even have an answer for you. That’s where I’m kept in the dark so I don’t mess things up. (Laugh)

Your band of desert rebels is truly the only vision so far of the flesh-and-blood humanity we have in Charlotte’s new world. And the show always explores the topic of what it means to be human. How do you think the Rebels will expand on that this season?

I think there’s one piece that runs through the show, and that’s the idea of free will. I think our group is definitely people who still hold the idea of free will and what that really means and that’s why they don’t want to be controlled. You will continue to see that as their goal. It’s just representative of what the show has always been about, now it’s a bit different from what free will is and who it’s for.

C meets the characters of Luke and Jeffrey for the first time in her group, and despite that tense introduction, she is the most trusting of them all. What does that say about who your character has become in this new world?

When I read three, I hadn’t read four, so I thought I believed but not much. Once I read four, I said, ‘Okay, you do whatever you can for love, right?’ We all do things that are probably not the healthiest people, and I think she definitely kept a lot of who she was when she was a kid, that’s her. very tough. But at the end of the day, she has Bear-Bear and Bear-Bear needs the lights on. There’s this part of her that’s still a baby because she has to grow up so fast and I think that’s why – I wouldn’t say she’s too open to what’s going on, but she He really, really wants something. And I think when you really want something, you sometimes do things that are contrary to your best judgment. I think that might be where she is. Her crew doesn’t want this as much as they like.

When your character decides to trust Bernard, it’s obviously a big deal as the others have basically said, “We need to get rid of them immediately.” In general, you do not always trust who you see or what you see and who is in control in this scheme. So does your character really trust him and how will he fit into their plan?

At this point, no one trusts Bernard – I don’t even really trust Bernard. I just want something from him. So I thought it would be interesting to see how that progressed with everyone in the rebel group, with him and with myself.

I saw a group of friends – Jeffrey, your new members – take a selfie on the carpet a few weeks ago, which is so cute. I imagine you all stick together pretty much. What was it like working with Jeffrey, working with the other original cast and new crew?

He’s been great to me and I feel like he’s like my best friend on set. He definitely supported me, which is a great thing when you’re on a show. I think he just knows everything too well. He just comes in and knows what’s going on and he gets the job done. You feel like you can follow the leader with him, which is great. I think working with all the OG people – we would say (Laugh) – really great and they are all very welcoming. But having the new team was great because we bonded together that neither of us knew anything, and we were all like, ‘Is this okay? Are we doing this right? It’s fun. Like a big, huge family.

Can we expect you to work with the cast outside of the desert?

I definitely get to work with Jeffrey and Luke and it’s been amazing. Then my two others, as you can see in the selfie, are like Daniel Wu and Morningstar Angeline. I think they are awesome. I had a great time with them. We really stick together just because it’s so hot and it’s in the desert and Morningstar and I have to kiss when it’s 100 degrees. We were so sweaty and disgusting and we were like, ‘Well, we’ll come in,’ and now we’re best friends. I see her every time she comes to LA or if I’m in New Mexico. We’re going to have a really fun journey together on the show and I’m glad everyone sees that.

Unlike the rest of the team, your team works in a really dry outdoor location. It’s not steel, great setup situation. How does it appear in elements?

I certainly expected the given situation (Laugh), but for me it at least really added to this Mad Max The dogfight situation where it’s like we were just out here trying to get to this cause and fight this thing. I think it really helps that we’re hot and sweaty. You’re feeling really hard and you’re having a hard time out there. Meanwhile, you only go to your trailer after that. (Laugh) But you definitely have this idea of how it feels like you’re actually in it and what the experience might be like to live that way.

You also mentioned Morningstar, who plays C’s counterpart. The show loves to explore, including through Caleb and C’s family ties, how the characters are forced to make choices and the bottom line. core of their being. Will your two characters’ romantic relationships reach that point, too?

I don’t know if it explores that too much. When I first read it, it was like, “Okay, this actually feels a bit like that kind of relationship,” but I think as it goes on, we’re each other’s yin and yang. We both have always kept each other on an equal footing because I think we’re both a little bit ready to go at any moment. I think that’s what makes them happy together. They have a very sweet relationship.

What are you most excited for viewers about when C will resume and what can they expect for the rest of the season?

I thought to see the progression of what she’s trying to achieve and where she ends up and what she’s really fighting for. I’m most excited for them to see her humanity because I think when you watch it, you’ll wonder why she behaves a certain way. We’re going on a big, big adventure with her and I think it’s going to be a really fun adventure. I will discover a lot of things that I have not discovered in any other character before.

The edited interview is long and clear.

Westworld airs new episodes every Sunday on HBO.
